Refugees in Britain.

An examination of the present position in Britain with regard

foreign refugees must surely have caused a revision of opinion among those who have reproached this country with having done very

little for these unfortunates, who have lost all through no fault of their own. At the present time there are 40,000 refugees in

Britain, all looked after in some way or another.

Some have found

employment, others are being cared for by friends, while a large number are being trained in various camps for the new life they

intend to take up in new countries.

A typical camp near the coast/of Sandwich, which has been planned for 3,500 refugees, has already a population of over 2,000, and further contingents are arriving at the rate of 200 per week, The camp was a military camp during the world war, and the refugees have themselves refitted the buildings under the guidance of an exiled architect. Among the refugees are many well-known artists, musicians and professional men from Berlin and Vienna, and the camp is developing into a highly individual community with a fine in-

tellectual and artistic standard.

Organised in groups, the refugees study languages and such subjects as will be most useful to them in the countries where they mean to make a new start. The British nation has never been lacking in charity; private individuals have contributed no less than

25,000,000 to the refugees in this country, and it is intended that the admission of refugees into Britain shall continue in accordance with all available opportunities and resources.
